I finally figured out how to get back on this LJ. Chrome seems to be the only one that is working for me when it comes to linking my Facebook sign on to it and other things.

I can't get any other browser to sign in through FB for some reason. Any who I guess that is all for now.

Not exactly a video about religion or the lack of it, but so strong was the effect it had on me that I decided to post it here.

One sometimes hears believers claim, that atheism has nothing to offer to the world. And you know what? For once they are right about something. Should a believer see this post, he/she might also point out that this piece of text is utterly pointless... and he/she would be right about that too! You see, this text is merely an attempt to show that I'm at least TRYING to do something myself, instead of just posting youtube videos made by someone else!

Which is what I'm going to do. Again. So if atheism offers the world nothing, what does christianity have to offer?

Discuss.

Dangerous beliefs: Eating chicken makes you gay! [Apr. 22nd, 2010|12:42 pm]

(cross-posted from my FA journal)

President of Bolivia Evo Morales said yesterday (and made it to the news as well) that eating chicken is the cause of homosexuality and baldness. That's based on...a rural legend of Bolivia from the 1950s (translation: "that's based on....absolutely nothing")

Read the story here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog.....ty-evo-morales

And here: http://guanabee.com/2010/04/evo-morales-chicken/

Brilliant, Evo! Absolutely brilliant! It's so reconforting to see presidents with such modern ideas. It's so reconforting to see that the fates of several millons of bolivians are in your very capable hands.

Christian fundies of the U.S., EAT YOUR HEART OUT! THIS IS REAL BULLSHIT!

A new book from Richard Dawkins [Sep. 10th, 2009|08:20 pm]

It appears that Mr. Dawkins has written a book for ignorant creationists as an attempt to make them better understand why evolution is a fact. A noble endeavour, but apparently Dawkins stoops into unnecessary patronizing. That is, at least according to some reviews.
As for us less delusional people, i doubt this book will give much joy. Unless you wish to be further convinced, or learn to know every detail to be able to convert people back to reason.

But now, it's time to me to shut my muzzle. Go read the URL

Not the first or last time you'll hear a story like this [Jul. 6th, 2009|06:45 pm]

istences
[music |Annuals - Bleary Eyed]

Oh, hi everyone. I know of at least a couple of you by association, if not directly. It's been a long, strange journey for me with religion until I reached this point.

Anyway, I teach biology at a university in Louisiana. Which, as you might imagine, has its moments.

I have this nugget to share today. ---> http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI124870/?56

Observe how people's pointless outrage blinds them from simple comprehension of what they're reading. It does not read "do not believe in God." There's nothing anti-Christian or anti-religion about it; they're advertising a support group! But of course there's nothing remotely unacceptable about posting any propaganda that instructs me to believe, or better, telling me I'm going to hell.

Is everybody's stockpile of marshmallows ready? Because, after all--what's the sense in us caring about what doesn't affect us?

In addition, "who else are they going to believe in?" Perhaps your parents or anybody that has a positive message of strong character, hard work, charity, goodwill and tolerance to share? This, of course, does not require a preacher, but isn't it just easier to outsource some of that responsibility and just tell your kids to not think for themselves? Wait...does this not make them even more susceptible to negative peer pressure? Maybe not; every brain is different, but the logic makes sense to me.

Also, "Big Mama." I might not have laughed because of the nickname, but because it was used in lieu of the woman's actual name in the story. Admit it, you did too!

Genesis Revisited: A Scientific Creation Story [May. 25th, 2009|10:18 pm]

[mood |amusedamused]
[music |Finntroll - Hel Vete]

To convey the logical absurdity of trying to squeeze the round peg of science into the square hole of religion, I penned the following scientific revision of the Genesis creation story. It is not intended as a sacrilege of the poetic beauty of Genesis; rather, it is a mere extension of what the creationists have already done to Genesis in their insistence that it be read not as mythic saga but as scientific prose. If Genesis were written in the language of modern science, it would read something like this...
